Jaipur’s defending Nahargarh Fort was one of the most significant structures in Indian history, especially during the Rajputana’s ruling era. It once served as the main fortification that guarded our fertile lands against the prying eyes of the invaders. The fort was also a recreational getaway for the royals.
Proudly standing on the rugged terrains of the Aravalli range, Nahargarh Fort offers breathtaking views of the sprawling pink city. The chaotic marketplaces and other sightseeing attractions in Jaipur. Along with its historical significance, travel enthusiasts can also witness its architectural prowess, one of its kind with intricate carvings on the walls and courtyards.
In this article, you will get to know everything about Nahargarh Fort’s history, architecture, timing, entry fee, nearby attractions and interesting facts.
Glorious Past of Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur
In 1734, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II laid down the foundation of this majestic fort. The construction was started at an impressive pace, but various obstacles made it challenging to complete the task. It is believed that the ghost of Rathore Prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia, obstructed the construction of the fort and the temple of the late prince in his memory.
The fort was earlier named as “Sudershangarh” but was later named Nahargarh Fort to remember Prince Nahar Singh Bhomia. The word Nahargarh also means “Abode of Tigers.” The Nahargarh Fort was initially intended to be the royal retreat and that’s why a summit overlooking the city was chosen as an apt location to build it. Along with Amber and Jaigarh Fort, it played a great importance in keeping the boundary of Jaipur safe from invaders.
The truce between the Rajputana kings and Marathi warriors was signed here in the 18th century. During the Indian Independence struggle in 1857, the then Jaipur king relocated the Europeans who were living in the region to the safety of the fort and natives. The place is under the jurisdiction of the government of Rajasthan.
Architecture of Nahargarh Fort –
Undoubtedly one of the best architectural marvels in India, Nahargarh Fort was built in the Indo-European style and had intricate carvings and motifs. The entrance is adorned by the gorgeous Tadigate. There are two temples, one is dedicated to Prince Nahar Singh Bomia while the other one is for Rajputana rulers. The fort is present at a height of 700 feet above the city level and the wall extends for several kms within the Nahargarh Biological Park in the Aravalli hills.
The most beautiful part of the Nahargarh Fort complex is the Madhavendra Palace built by Sawai Madho Singh. It’s a two-storied royal residence with separate chambers for the king and the queens. There are 9 queenly chambers, all built in the same pattern with ample space for a lobby, kitchen, bedroom and living area. Afterward, discover the Diwan-i-Aam, an area where the king addressed his followers, administrative heads and subjects. It was always a place to enjoy recreational activities and cultural performances that happened during the royal era.
