The Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur is dedicated to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister after Independence. History of Jawahar Kala Kendra –

Charles Correa the late architect from MIT, created and built the Jawahar Kala Kendra in 1986. The structure was finished in 1991 and was built using the “Navagraha” design, often known as the nine-house mandala. The Rajasthani government commissioned the centre’s construction and in 1993 opened it to art and culture lovers.

JKK’s maintenance began to deteriorate and the complex was neglected. Boost Jaipur tourism and culture, the then-chief minister of Rajasthan dedicated in 2015 that the Jawahar Kala Kendra be renovated for art and cultural events. Architecture of Jawahar Kala Kendra –

Jawahar Kala Kendra’s architecture is founded on the grounds of Shilpa Shastra and Vastu, built to conserve Rajasthan’s historic culture, customs and art. Theatres, exhibition galleries, dorms, dining options, auditoriums and a coffee shop are located within the main structure. Based on a planet from Navagraha, each one is like the corresponding planet in terms of personality.

Red-colored sandstone and white marble make up the entire complex and each façade is adorned with vastu motifs. Jupiter's features are like those of the planet.

The library is painted in lemon yellow which is the preferred color of Jupiter. Due to the library, people throng here to gain knowledge and because of the quality of the planet Jupiter. The building was constructed in the shape of the planet which serves as a library.

The roof's bamboo beams are partially exposed to the sun, giving it a beautiful appearance. The library claims to have over 14,000 books in its collection. The open 8 square of Navagraha mandala is referred to as Madhyavarti.

The lunar mandala or the moon is connected to the café. The Jawahar Kala Kendra’s central dome over the entrance plaza is adorned with paintings and murals showcasing Jain mythology. Adjacent to this complex is a rural area showcasing the rural setup of several other Rajasthani regions. The complex is known as Shilpgram, a site of the yearly Lokrang folk art festival.

Theatres at Jawahar Kala Kendra –

The Jawahar Kala Kendra encloses 3 theatres, one open and 2 closed. The open theatre is famous among travellers and can accommodate 400 people at one time. It is located at the centre of the premises. Its openness prefers to rehearse its plays here. The JKK’s other two theatres are known as “Rangyan” and “Krishnayan” hosts more personal plays that focus on societal themes.
