Maharana Sajjan Singh was built in the late 19th century, around 1881 AD. The main objective was the construct a big, beautiful public garden for the residents of Udaipur through the importation of many foreign species of trees, plants and flowers into the locality. The original name was attributed to the garden, due to its construction by the Maharana himself was the Sajjan Niwas Garden. This place was named Gulab Bagh due to the immense number and variety of roses that were planted here.

Victoria Hall Museum and Saraswati Bhawan Library were built during the rule of Maharana Sajjan Singh, reflecting his progressive ideas for the welfare, education and culture of the public. The establishment of the library was remarkable and showed dedication toward academic pursuits in a public environment. The zoo’s origin is equally ancient, tracing to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It began as a small menagerie to house the royal family’s collection. Over the years, it expanded and opened to the public, finally being named the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

Places to visit near Gulab Bagh and Zoo –

Lake Pichola is on the east bank of the lake lies the garden. A mere walking distance from here, you may stroll down to the sea for sightseeing or a boating tour.

Dudh Talai is located close to the garden, houses two beautiful gardens: Manik Lal Verma Garden and Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Park, connected by a pedestrian path and offers spectacular views of Lake Pichola.
